~ Beware! This Book is HAUNTED! ~

While you're waiting for all those goblins to show up, why not entertain yourself with a little romantic suspense ~

Blurb ~

It doesn’t matter to Valerie Wiggins that most people believe Jason McLain killed his wife. She needs the three-time Oscar winner’s expertise in special effects if they are going to turn their local charity’s annual haunted house into a money maker. Besides, every since she first saw his picture in the tabloids, she’s been attracted to him: his piercing dark brown eyes, unruly brown hair, and unsmiling mouth. And even though he’s come to this small town in the Sierra Nevada mountains to hide, she won’t take no for an answer. Except once he says yes, he fears he’s pulled her into the darkness that continues to haunt him.

Excerpt ~

“Nowadays every town and city in the United States has a haunted house at Halloween time. If you want Slaterville’s to bring people from miles around, it’s going to have to be different. More spectacular, frightening, and mysterious than any other haunted house in Northern California.”
Valerie Wiggins parked her white Ford in front of a run-down, peak-roofed mountain cabin and cursed herself for standing up and giving that speech at the last WIN meeting. The squeaking door didn’t get oiled, it got volunteered. It was now her responsibility to create a “different” haunted house, and her job to make sure it was more spectacular, frightening, and mysterious than any other haunted house around.

Just what she needed, another job.

She didn’t have the time. She didn’t have the energy.

Cut the bull, she told herself as she stared at the cabin. The truth was, she did have the time. And the energy. And she didn’t mind being in charge of the project. What she didn’t want to do was talk to the man who lived in this house.

“We have just the person who can help us turn our haunted house into a success,” she’d said at the meeting that night. “Living right outside of town.”
As if every woman in the room didn’t know about Jason McLain.

So now, thanks to her big mouth, she was the one appointed to talk to Slaterville’s newest and most infamous resident. His reputation alone scared most of the other women.

His reputation scared Val.

Unless you knew, you’d never guess a man who’d won three Academy Awards for special effects lived in this house. If he was as rich as the papers had said, he sure wasn’t using his money to upgrade his property. In the six months since he’d moved to Slaterville, he’d done nothing to improve the exterior of the old Dalton place. The fence was broken in several places; beneath the snow, the small patch of lawn that had existed years before was no more than weeds; the bushes around the house were overgrown and dying; and the porch sagged. All of the wood needed a fresh coat of paint.

The only changes she could see from back when the place had stood abandoned for years were the broken windows had been replaced and heavy drapes and venetian blinds kept passersby from looking inside. There were certainly no signs of life. The snow hadn’t been shoveled from the walkway, no smoke curled from the chimney, and no lights showed behind the closed drapes and blinds. There was nothing to indicate anyone lived in the cabin except the tire tracks that led to the garage near the side door.

Or perhaps away from it.

Maybe he’s not home, Val thought as she opened her car door.

*****

Jason heard two raps at the side door and grumbled into the near darkness of his living room. It had to be Bud, back from the store. He’d said he was going for a six-pack of beer, but he’d probably bought more and couldn’t open the door.

Again there were two raps.

Light.

Hesitant.

Jason pushed himself up from the sofa and started toward the kitchen. Why had Bud come anyway? It wasn’t as though an invitation had been issued. The past was better forgotten, and that included friendships. Besides, in the past three years, Bud hadn’t exactly been Mr. Stand-By-Your-Side.

Jason had to admit, if only to himself, that had hurt.

He shook his head as he walked between the sink and the table, both of which were piled with dishes. Dammit all, he’d left Hollywood to find solitude, to get away from the memories. Two and a half years of being harassed by the police and media had been enough. His own doubts were enough.

If Bud expected him to be Mr. Jovial, he’d driven five hundred miles for nothing, and a few beers wouldn’t change that.

Praise for haunted ~

This review is from: Haunted (Kindle Edition)
As always, another Maris Soule book and well worth the read. I just noticed that her “As the Crow Flies” is now available on Kindle. Definitely going to add that to my collection, too.

“Write what you love and know.” That’s the advice given to writers.

I fell in love with the Rhodesian Ridgeback the first time I saw one at a dog show. I love their temperament, their intelligence, and their personalities. I’ve shown them, bred them, whelped them, cried when I sent a puppy off to a new owner, and been as proud as a motherwhen one won at a dog show.

I also love living in the country. I have childhood memories of catching pollywogs in the creek that ran by our two acres in Walnut Creek, California; being able to pick ripe peaches from the tree (also almonds, pears, English walnuts, apricots and more); and sitting in my “thinking” tree making up stories.

When I married my husband, we were living in Santa Barbara, but his father was ill and we decided to move to Michigan to be closer to him. It was supposed to be a short-term move (just a couple years, my husband said). I won’t tell you how many years we’ve now lived in Michigan, but we now have grown children and teenage granddaughters. I haven’t regretted the move. Michigan is a beautiful state, and for 27 years we lived in the rural community of Climax. What a perfect location for a romance writer, and what a neat place to plot a mystery with a lot of suspense. (Yes, there are some similarities between the real Climax and my imaginary Zenith in The Crows and As the Crow Flies, but the events and people in those books are definitely fictional.)

We’ve now moved close to Lake Michigan (so my husband is near his sailboat), and we spend our winters in Florida, not far from the Gulf Coast. Both locations feed my love of being near water (remember that creek I played in and Santa Barbara) and are ideal places to nurture my desire to write. Whether I’m writing a romance, a mystery, or a combination of the two, I’m probably going to include an animal or two and there’s a good chance the characters will live in the country, the mountains, or near water. I’ve often used Michigan and California as settings, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Florida shows up in a future book. I’m sometimes asked if the characters in my books are based on me or someone I know. My answer is: Maybe bits and pieces, but my protagonists are always braver and smarter than I am (along with younger) and the antagonists are always nastier than the people I’ve known.

Sounds Like Love

When Sam Blake walks into The Quarter Note, the bar that Megan McGuire and her father own, they are in desperate need of an entertainer. Sam’s statement that “I’ve been told I’m a pretty good guitar player” is an understatement. He’s not only good, he’s soon drawing in customers and changing their financial situation. He’s also enticing Megan in ways she doesn’t understand. She doesn’t want to get involved a man who will take off any day. She doesn’t want to get involved with any musician. After all, she made that mistake once, and as much as she loves her ten-year-old son, she’s older and wiser now. Or is she?

Set in the resort area of Shady Lake, Michigan, its more than the summer heat that has Megan questioning the crazy desire Sam so easily ignites.

Originally published in the mid-80s by Harlequin Temptation, Sounds Like Love has been revised and updated, yet maintains the sensuous romantic theme of the original story.

Ross knows his priority has to be his scarred, traumatized daughter, but he’s more than willing to help Sasha, especially since he can’t keep her out of his thoughts…and would love to get her into his bed.

As the Crow Flies {P.J. Benson Mysteries}

~ "If Love Isn't Worth Fighting For, What Is?" ~ LOVE'S BATTLE ~

I'm so happy to have author Angela Hayes with us today to talk to us about her romance LOVE'S BATTLE. But before we do that, let's find out a little bit more about Angela herself.

So, Angela, what is something you struggle with when you write?

Right now I'm struggling to write different character personalities. In my first book, Love's Battle, my main character was Love Howard, the youngest of triplets. Book two will focus on the oldest, Faith, and book three on the middle, Hope. I'm finding it difficult to write the sisters' personalities, likes and dislikes without creating carbon copies of Love. Just because they look alike doesn't mean they are the same people- they each have their own issues, so they each need their own personas that while keeping them separate, still keep them united.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have four kids including a set of triplets and they are ALL completely different. I find it hard to believe sometimes that they came from my husband and I. How do you balance the demands of your everyday life and your writing life?

Having a full time job and growing kids, I find it very difficult to balance everyday life and writing life. I continuously plan to spend my weekends writing and dissapoint myself everytime because something comes up here or there. People tell me it will get better when the kids go off to college, I'm not convinced but I am hopeful. If I can jot down an idea here or there, I feel like I've accomplished something. I have tons of ideas simmering just waiting for the right time when I'll put them to written word.

I hear you my sister. Sometimes I feel like I'm constantly doing for someone else. This one wants this. That one needs that. When's it gonna be my turn. But actually, I'm pretty lucky to have a decent amount of time to write. Do you have hobbies that you’d like to share?

I have a ton of hobbies. At the top of my list is Pinteresting. What? It's a thing. Do you realize how many hours a week you spend on that site, it's outrageous! I have a huge soft spot for crocheting. I'm currently making a sweater for a friend. I'm learning to knit and have been working a piece for nearly a year- I hope to finish soon. And I'm currently looking into learning how to spin my own yarn. Like writing, I love the idea of taking something literally from nothing and giving it life.

I've tried knitting. I guess I just didn't get the knitting gene. Where do you live? Where would you love to live?

I live in a small rural town in central Alabama- attesting to it's size, the school my kids attend is still a 1A! A beautiful place full of community spirit and involvement, it's ripe with literary potential. But if I could live anywhere, I would certainly love a homestead in Scotland or Ireland (I've always fantasized about this) or maybe a chic penthouse in the center of Paris, or a Spanish villa in Madrid. Fingers crossed I become a bestseller so I can do it all!!

Sound like a girl after my own heart. At least we sometimes get to go to these places through our reading and writing. Share with us a little about your family. Married? Kids? Pets?

My husband and I just celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary- go us!Together we have two beautiful kids, a boy and a girl- who keep us on the go and then there's our dog- Mercury- he's half pug, half Boston terrier and thinks he's human!

Congratulations! That's wonderful! What is your concept of a fruitful day?

A fruitful day would consist of sitting down at my laptop and tapping away at the keys until Faith's Forever, the sequel to Love's Battle is complete and ready for edits.

It's gonna happen. What are your three favorite smells?

I love the smell of vanilla, the library, and stepping outside to inhale those first few deep breathes of crisp fall air- glorious.

Ahh, yes! Fall is my favorite time of year, too. Now let's hear a little bit more about LOVE'S BATTLE!

Blurb ~

Love Howard has more than a knack for matchmaking. Born from a forbidden passion and a twelve-hundred-year-old promise, she and her sisters can literally see true love. And while Love has no problem bringing other couples together, her own romantic life could use a little help.

Danton DeAngelo has always been well grounded in reality. So it throws him for no small loop when the woman he’s fallen for believes that she’s been reincarnated eleven times and can actually see true love.

Now Danton is faced with the biggest decision of his life. Accept Love for who she really is, or walk away from her forever.

Excerpt  `

The hand Love pressed to her brow was visibly shaking. “There’s something I need to tell you. I just need you to keep an open mind.”

“What is it? Are you sick?” Danton asked.

“No, I’m not sick.” Her voice trembled on a forced laugh. “It’s something else. Something I‘ve been trying to prepare you for. This would be so much easier if you believed in magic. If you could believe that what I’m about to tell you is the honest truth.”

Turning, Love opened the iron chest, the hinges groaning with the effort as specks of rust littered the floor. From its depths she pulled out a clear plastic bag that she held tight to her chest, eyes closed, before handing it to a confused Danton.

“This is my tartan, my plaid. Before it faded and was dinner for the moths, it was once patterned in checks of green, gray, and brown. The purple and white stripes that ran through the hem identified the wearer as part of the royal family.” Love tapped the plastic, her finger pointing out where each color should be. “It was a gift from my father. The first and only time my sister’s and I met him, he was on his deathbed, we were eighteen. A week later our mother died in the same moment he drew his last breath.” Needing the extra air Love drew a breath of her own. “That day was the thirteenth of February, eight-hundred and fifty-eight AD. My father was Cinaed mac Alpin, crowned king of the Picts and Gaels. He was Scotland’s first king.”

“Eight- hundred and fifty-eight?” That couldn’t be right, she was only twenty-five. “Don’t you mean Nineteen-eighty-seven?”

“No. I was born for the first time in Scotland during the middle of the ninth century.”

BWWM (black woman, white man) interracial romance

Excerpt ~

He rang the doorbell and seconds later, the door opened. His breath caught in his throat as his gaze traveled the length of her body. He took in her long thick hair, curled at the ends, and hanging just past her shoulders. The sleek red dress that wrapped around her luscious curves and stopped a few inches above her knees screamed ‘take me now’. Jada JJ Jenkins was one of the most beautiful women he’d ever met, but tonight the sexy vixen had the blood in his head flowing south at record speed.

Zack released a long, piercing whistle between his lips before he could stop himself. Words escaped him. Watching the way her gaze took in his apparel, appreciation glittering in her eyes was enough to make him want to take her right then, and there.

“Wow!” she finally said and stepped closer. Her hands did a slow glide up his chest, sending his libido into overdrive. Zack knew that if they didn’t leave for the restaurant immediately they weren’t going. Instead, he was going to lift her in his arms and carry her to the nearest bedroom.

“Jada,” he said tightly, warning in his voice.

Ignoring his tone, she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Mr. Anderson, I must say, you clean up verynicely. I hope you’re ready for a night you’ll never forget.”

Loving her boldness, he snaked his arms around her tiny waist, pulling her close, wanting her to relish the effect she was having on him. He rubbed his pelvis against her softness. “Any time with you is unforgettable.”

He lowered his head and his mouth covered hers, devouring the tenderness of her lips. A jolt of desire shot through him like a seventy-mile-per-hour tornado taking out everything in its wake. How could one kiss rock his world the way this one was rocking him? The feel of her lips against his felt like home.

His hands had a mind of their own as they slowly glided over her hips and landed on her firm butt. A moan pierced the air and Zack didn’t know if the throaty sigh came from her or him and at the moment, he didn’t care. All he knew was that the combustible yearning roaring through his body bordered on unbearable.

“Uh, you guys need to either bring that inside or take it outside. But whatever you do, close my door,” Christina said from some place nearby. Zack wasn’t sure since he wasn’t ready to end the intense lip-lock. “You’re letting the heat out!”

Both were slow to respond to Christina’s reprimand. Jada eased her grip from around his neck, and he moved his hands up to her waist. “I’m not ready to let you go,” Zack mumbled against her lips.

“And I’m not ready for you to let me go.” She gave him one last kiss before stepping away, giving him a firsthand view of her backless dress and perfectly round ass.

Good Lord!

Jada grabbed her handbag and a Kate Spade jacket from a small table in the foyer. “Maybe we can pick this up in the car or after dinner. Or better yet, why don’t we have a little dinner, go to the theater, and then finish this up at your place tonight.”

He tugged on the handle of her bag, forcing her to him then lowered his head to her ear and whispered. “How is that better? Why don’t we just skip dinner and the theater and just head straight to my place?”

She leaned back, placed her hand on her hip, and batted her long eyelashes. “Sorry, babe, but this dress,” her hand slid from the side of her breast down past her hip, “is meant to be seen.” Flashing a wicked smile that only made Zack more aroused, she looped her arm through his and pulled him out the door.

How in hell was he supposed to sit through dinner and a show with her in that dress and knowing she had big plans for him once they made it back to his place?

~This Book Is UNLOCKED TREASURE!~

Good morning and happy weekend! We made it through the work week again! Kudos to us! Now we get to celebrate by curling up with UNLOCKED TREASURE! Please welcome my friend Linda Carroll-Bradd.

Blurb ~

Aleen MacRae blames the lure of the sea for breaking apart first her family then her engagement. When her interest is caught by a man she sees both in person and in a dream, she resists—afraid to believe in her aunt’s prediction that her future is tied to the sea.

Braden Williams is on the hunt for treasure buried centuries earlier by Rhode Island pirates. His search brings him to the property where Aleen lives. Collaboration on genealogy research draws them closer, and Braden steers her toward his true passion--sailing.

Attending a party with Braden’s family lets her glimpse what she’s been missing. An unexpected discovery before her date with Braden at the Halloween Midnight Organ Recital forces a decision. Will Aleen play things safe or accept what this free-spirited man offers?

Excerpt ~

Ah, the story of her life—practically invisible. The reminder his first sighting had been of her bikini-clad backside made her blush. Still didn’t change the facts. Aleen squared her shoulders. “I remember, but the Manor grounds are still closed.” Should she be nervous about being alone with this stranger, especially one who ignored posted rules?

“Sorry for the intrusion. Let me start over.” Smiling, he approached and extended his right hand. “My name’s Braden Williams.”

Aleen bit her lower lip, but accepted his hand. “Pleased to meet you. I’m Aleen MacRae.” At the moment their hands clasped, she felt warmth flooding her fingers. With a jerk, she released her grip, tingling sensations running along her skin. Immediately, the scent of fresh air and summer breezes wafted her way. Definitely a man of the sea. Just where I foretold your future lies. Whispers of her great-aunt Zsofika’s prophecy trickled through Aleen’s thoughts. At the memory, her cheeks flamed with heat.

“Wow.” Frowning, Braden flexed his hand and narrowed his gaze then dropped it to his flexing fingers. “That was bizarre.”

“Static electricity, from all that wind yesterday.” A reasonable explanation. In the back of her mind, Aleen could hear Zsofika scoff, “Static schmatic. A connection like that is destiny.”

“Well…” His gaze searched her face. “Aleen—hey, that’s pretty, like the direction alee.” A wide smile exposed even teeth.

Her own smile dimmed. Like I’ve never heard that before. “Thanks.” This guy was not charming his way around the rules. “Sorry, but you’ll need to come back when the gardens are open for visitors. That’s Wednesdays through—”

“Yeah, I read the sign.” He gave a dismissive wave then turned to gaze back at the main house. “But I just needed five minutes to check out some dimensions and the lot layout.”

“So, you woke up this morning and just decided to start out your week by trespassing?”

I grew up in the Western Suburbs of Sydney in the 50's and 60's.

My parents are originally from the Newcastle-Under-Lyme area of England and came to Australia in 1952 as £10 poms. They came under a migration scheme to help Australia with workers.
My father was a Painter and Decorator and I was the eldest of five children.

I was a Nurse, a career that spanned more than 35 years. During my career I specialized in caring for people with Alzheimer's type Dementia, an area that fascinates me despite how heartbreaking it can be.

When I retired 4 years ago I decided it was time to get the stories out of my head and onto paper. From there I just hoped my stories were interesting and well written enough to attract readers.

It is difficult being a new author now that anyone can publish a book. I can understand readers' reticence to read Indie authors but hopefully they will give people like me a chance. I find as an avid reader, you can be pleasantly surprised most of the time. I can't imagine sticking to just one or two authors and just because an author has a publisher doesn't make them good. I have certainly read some terrible books which have been published by some of the largest companies.

I do hope readers enjoy my books and would love them to leave reviews.

Once freed, the roller coaster of Tom’s grief and rage alienates them on issues of retribution and clemency. Bound to each other from their first flicker of interest, the couple weathers both the bank-robbery trial and the death of Gina’s ailing mother to a final testing of their faith, trust and affection.

Geneva’s City Bank, Illinois

Friday, September 28th

Gina rubbed the bridge of her nose acknowledging defeat might be at hand. The black-and-white marble tiles on the bank’s floor summoned the checkered flag she had ceased to pursue. As a racecar driver Gina taught herself to take violent hits. Perhaps the Lord wouldn’t answer her fervent prayers for a deluge of ready cash. She ducked her head and released the arms of the chair as she’d learned to let go of the steering wheel for unavoidable collisions.

Gina’s financial history would soon blink to life on the loan officer’s computer screen. Would their high-school flirtations fifteen years earlier sufficiently influence Jonas Woods? Gina had trailed behind a bevy of football fans following every move of any coach’s dream, the Woods twins – Thomas and Jonas. She predicted Jonas’s dark eyebrows would raise when he reviewed her negative credit reports.

Her checkbook was as empty as her credit cards were overflowing because of her mother’s continuing medical costs. To help with household expenses, Gina found a job as a school bus driver. Now, she hoped the bank would give her a loan on her mother’s equity in the house to fix its leaky roof and the ancient plumbing, as well as cover the mounting medical debts. Would Jonas want her to have the money?

Gina smiled at him for all she was worth.

Jonas’s head moved closer to his computer screen as he scrutinized her unbelievable amount of debt. Gina had no friends or extended family to tide her over the financial rough patch. As a race-car driver, she never felt a part of the gang. Despite her loyal team, she’d raced alone competing against men. Now she was experiencing the same need for individual courage.

Across the aisle, a bank guard lifted his head toward the balcony at the noise of the vault door swinging open. Gina recognized the guard as Jonas’s twin, Thomas. His mouth was drawn in a thin line of concentration. Tom’s dark blue uniform barely fit his gigantic frame. Then she met his eyes. The combined black of iris and pupil immersed her in their languid pool…until dollar bills starting falling from overhead.

A single hundred dollar bill landed on the knee of Gina’s white wool trouser. Ignoring the delighted hubbub from the other bank patrons, Gina didn’t move lest it sail away. The Lord might revoke the miracle of pennies from heaven. How many pennies in a hundred dollars? How many pennies did she need to fix the roof? Maybe she could just glue the coppers to the shingles to keep the rain out.

Jonas jumped up, shoving clumps of the showering bills into his pockets. Maybe he needed money as much as she did. Obviously, neither of them had been taught the proper etiquette for an actual, finite miracle. Jonas danced into the aisle with his arms lifted over his head catching the falling money.

Then noise and spraying bullets cut across his middle, folding him onto the floor.
