~ IN THE EYES of Film Critic/Author Sylv Jenkins! ~

Please help me welcome author and film critic Sylv Jenkins to the blog!

Tell me, Sylv, when did your love for writing start?

I’ve been writing short stories about 20 years now, just for me to escape into. I had three short stories published in a book with some other authors about 9 years ago, which was out for three months as we were raising money for a charity. Now that was a great feeling.

I stopped writing for a few years and then I started it back up again last year where I wrote my first novella. When I finished I put it aside until recently when I had a stern talk with myself about getting it published, so I’m hoping this year will be the year, although after reading the first few chapters I have changed quite a bit of it.

Do you have a job outside of writing? What is it and how does it mesh with your writing?

I’m self employed running Film Festivals around Hampshire, when films are submitted, I will watch and make a decision on whether or not to show at our festivals. I also critique and review as well. My other job is the best, I home educate my 9 year old daughter. We took her out of school May 2015 due to her being ill. She lost so much confidence in herself and she couldn’t catch up with the class. Today she is my bubbly little girl full of life and learning so much.

I'm glad your daughter is better! As a film critic, I'm sure watching all those films adds to your writing. Do you have hobbies that you’d like to share?

Spending time with my family, reading, writing, and watching films.

Where do you live? Where would you love to live?

I live in the UK, but I would love to live somewhere exotic, I can dream :)

Share with us a little about your family. Married? Kids? Pets?

I live with my partner, Joe and my three wonderful kids, Helyn 17, Rhys 14 and Jayne 9. We have 6 guinea pigs (well they are really Helyn’s but they are gorgeous and you will often find me out in the garage talking with them) and we are looking at getting some fish.

That's a lot of guinea pigs! What was your nickname growing up or now?

People could never spell my name right, Sylvia would become Slyvia or Silver at one point. So I was know as Sly until about 10 years ago and people called me Sylv which has stuck with me every since.

Who was your hero when you were a child, and what did you do to be like them?

My dad was my hero, all through my childhood he was very ill, but I can always remember how strong he was and he always kept going no matter what right up until he died just aged 50.

Sounds like quite a guy! Thanks for joining us, Sylv, and best wishes for IN THE EYES!

In The Eyes is about twins who have special powers that ignite when they reach a certain age.

Hi Sylv, Your dad sounds like he was a wonderful man! How sweet he was your hero. I love that. How interesting that you review films for the film festival. That has got to be so much fun! I imagine it's difficult to choose between them at times. My son is a film maker in Los Angeles and has had some success over the years in film festivals here in the US. Your book cover is chilling, btw! Best wishes to you and here's to much success!

Hi, Darcy! That's cool that your son is in the film making industry. I guess creativity runs in the family. I love the cover, too. Really draws you in. Thanks for being part of our conversation today!

I've always had a thing for eyes. This cover kind of reminds me of THE GREAT GATSBY and the optometrist's billboard. But intense eyes draw you into a cover. That's what I look for often. Thanks for adding your comments to the conversation, Alicia! Have a great week!

Late, as always...loved the interview, Sylv. Your cover is fabulous. So simple but really grabbed me. I wonder how many twins wish they had special powers like that. :-)

Some of us like to think we're film critics! Thanks for joining us, Susan! Have a wonderful weekend! It's knocking on the door!

It is stunning, isn't it? So glad you stopped in and added a comment. Thank you!

The real question is do they say, "Wonder Twin powers--activate! Form the shape of a bird. Form water." ...and I hope someone gets that! Thanks for adding to our conversation, Leah! Have a great day!
