~ This Story Will Hit You Like A BOLT! ~ Author Kate Hill's Fangs and Fists Series! ~

Good morning! Please welcome author Kate Hill to the spotlight. Kate shared a bit of herself by answering a few interview questions, and then filled us in on her novel BOLT, the first in her Fangs and Fists Series. So let's get to know Kate....

When did your love for writing start?

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a writer. I’ve always loved telling stories.

That would be my answer as well. What is the best thing you’ve learned about writing and/or the publishing business?

The best thing I’ve learned is that you need to know what you want from writing. Not everyone is going to have financial success through writing and everyone has different ideas about what defines success. You can’t please everyone, so at the end of the day you need to do what’s right for you. I think that’s true about writing as well as life in general.

So true! Sometimes it takes a while to figure that out. Like most writers, I'm sure you find it challenging to keep on top of things. How do you balance the demands of your everyday life and your writing life?

I’ve always made time for it. In the past that meant choosing (and often preferring) to stay home alone and write a story than go out and socialize. Sometimes it means writing or proof reading on my lunch break during the day job. The only thing that has slowed down my writing is health issues within my family. I love writing, but for me family comes first.

Do you have hobbies that you’d like to share?

I love to work out and I’m also a huge fan of horror movies and comic books.

Interesting! Now, just for fun, what CD is in your CD player right now?

I use an MP3 player. The last song I listened to was I Apologize by Five Finger Death Punch.

Ahh. Another Five Finger fan! Name your favorite children's story.

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.

That is one of my all-time favorites, too! Such a fun book! What was your nickname growing up or now?

Growing up, my parents called me Punch.

Hmm...never heard of that one. What is your biggest pet peeve?

It’s a tie between rudeness and self-righteousness.

Oh, yes! What are your three favorite smells?

The first is the smell of dogs. I know it’s probably gross to most people, but I find the smell of a dog comforting. I also love the scent of coconut and gardenia.

See, that's why I love to interview people. There are so many different answers to these questions. We've never had the smell of a dog before!

Now, let's find out a little bit more about BOLT, Fangs and Fists 1....

In a futuristic world ruled by demons, werewolves are enslaved to fight in gladiatorial matches for the amusement of their evil masters.

Kiara remembers what life was like living free–before she was taken by demons and bred to gladiators so that the new generations of wolves would retain their ferocity but forget their freedom. Mated to top gladiator Grit, she has a son with this surprisingly gentle lover who is also planning their escape. When Grit is killed in the arena, his close friend Bolt upholds his promise to protect Kiara and the cub.

Bolt and Kiara have loved each other from the moment they met, but they buried their feelings because she was mated to his best friend. When Grit dies, despite their guilt, Bolt and Kiara surrender to their desire for each other. Will their love be strong enough to help them win freedom from their evil masters?

excerpt ~

Startled, Kiara jumped to her feet, her senses alive. Two guards shoved Bolt inside. Naked and covered from head to toe in dried blood, he stood, trembling visibly. His blue gaze found hers and Kiara felt a bit ill. She'd never seen him like this.

"She's yours now," said one of the guards. "We'll remove the cub of her previous mate."

Kiara nearly panicked. She growled, her inner wolf on the verge of attacking the guards, futile as it would be. Still, she'd rather die fighting to protect Jett than willingly surrender him to these monsters.

"No," Bolt said. "The cub is too young. Let her keep him for now."

"Very well," said the second guard. "But it will soon be weaned. Do your duty, wolf. She's a healthy female and ripe for more offspring."

The guards marched out, leaving Kiara and Bolt facing each other.

Kiara wasn't sure about the severity of his injuries. The blood covering him didn't look fresh, which was good. Apparently any wounds he'd sustained had started to heal. She couldn't begin to guess what he'd endured.

"Come sit." Kiara reached for his hand. It was ice cold and he jerked away.

"I'm a mess."

"It's not the first time I've had blood on me," she said, remembering the days when she'd hunted with her pack.

This time when she took his hand, he tightened his grip so that it was almost painful and followed her to the washroom. She turned on the water in the black tile shower.

Kiara withdrew her hand from his grasp to cover the toilet with a towel. Then she urged him to sit while she wet another towel in the sink.

"Do you have any open wounds that need attention?" she asked.

"I think they've all healed. I've been in a cubicle for most of the night," he said, his voice a bit hoarse.

Neither spoke for several moments while she cleaned the blood from his face. All the while he stared at her. Bolt had the most beautiful eyes she'd ever seen -- almond shaped and the blue of a clear autumn sky.

The towel turned red and she washed it again, wrung it out and left it on the side of the sink. By then shower was steaming up the bathroom.

"Get in," she said.

~ Everyone Wants To Be DEMON KISSED, So Pucker Up! ~

So happy to be able to introduce to my friend, author Karilyn Bentley with her newest release, DEMON KISSED. Isn't this a great cover, by the by? The sexy little pose of the demon huntress, the colors, the way the series name does that ombre kind of fade out thing... But before we get to the book, let's find out a little more about Karilyn...

When did your love for writing start?

Probably about the same time I learned to spell. I used to come up with stories that were a lot like Nancy Drew (who was my favorite heroine as a kid). I always wrote stories in my head but never thought of writing as a career until after I was married.

I wrote stories as a kid, too. I wonder how many other authors started with hole-punched, yarn bound books. How do you balance the demands of your everyday life and your writing life?

Oh, you're supposed to balance them?? Seriously, I have no idea. Which is probably why I'm the slowest writer ever.

I hear you! I have no physical balance (always falling over in Tai Chi class) and can't balance my responsibilities, either. Do you have a job outside of writing? What is it and how does it mesh with your writing?

I work in a busy oncology clinic as a clinical researcher. That means I help run clinical trials. What it really means is that I'm a glorified paper pusher. It's a good job and I enjoy it. Not sure it meshes with my writing.

Do you have hobbies that you’d like to share?

I used to paint but haven't since my grandmother died. One of these days I'll pick my brushes up again.

I hope you do. I'm sure you have a lot to offer! Share with us a little about your family. Married? Kids? Pets?

Married, no kids, one dog, aka The Kraken. We used to have two dogs at a time for most of our married life, but they all passed on and are waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge. We haven't decided if we are going to get another one to keep The Kraken company. Maybe in the future?

The Kraken? I'm not sure I'd like to meet this Kraken in a dark alley. ;) Now, just for fun-

If you could be any animal, what animal would you choose, and why?

A fly. Imagine all the juicy conversations you could overhear by lurking on the wall.

I believe that is the first time I've ever gotten that answer, but it's a good one! When trick-or-treating as a kid, was there any kind of candy that you didn’t like to get?

I was allergic to chocolate as a kid. Awful, right? And I was always sick around Halloween so Mom would dress me and my brother up, sit us on the couch, and have our friends come over. I'd get all their "yucky" candy (aka, the non-chocolate treats) and they'd get some chocolate bars. It worked out great for all.

I'm not sure if being allergic to chocolate would be a curse or a blessing... What one thing (modern convenience) could you not live without?

Electricity! That pretty much sums it up.

It is a pretty dandy invention, isn't it? Comes in handy! Well, thanks for sharing a little bit about yourself with us. How 'bout we hear a little more about DEMON KISSED...

Blurb ~

Gin Crawford, the world's latest demon huntress, has no time to mourn her dead lover as she's called in to determine why a demon attack occurred at the local medical school. And not just any demon, but the one demon that gives her demon-killing bracelet the shivers. A dead professor, a lab full of missing anthrax, and a demon who turns good people into minions complicate her life. Can Gin and her mentor Aidan Smythe solve the mystery of the missing anthrax and the identity of the demon before someone else dies?

Excerpt ~

The scent of sulfur hangs in the air like a demonic stink bomb. I want to slap a hand over my nose, but no one else seems affected by the stench. Must be a demon huntress thing.

“Justitian,” Smythe mutters. “Not demon huntress.”

“If you don’t like my new title, then stay out of my mind.”

He glares. I swallow. Cross my arms. Refuse to take a step back. I’m learning not to be intimidated by his anger. Go me.

My justitia vibrates, throwing me out of my internal battle, pulling me back to the land of death and minions. The blob of colors pulsates, a glowing reminder of a moment of terror. The moment the demon appeared to the grad student.

Granted, I’m still taking Demons 101, but I thought demons formed minions in private. Usually after the human committed a crime, not before. A tryout, so to speak. And maybe that happened, but it sure seems to me like the black blob of demon force appeared to the grad student smack in the middle of the hallway.

Or maybe that always happens, and I just now noticed it.

The justitia’s vibration grows stronger, trembling my arm, my veins. Not its normal excited tremor upon seeing a minion or demon. A rush of images spikes through my mind, scenes of terror coupled with blood and death, memories of the justitia’s former wearers captured in time by the entity in the bracelet.

I’m not the only one freaked out by the colored blob. How bad was this demon to scare a justitia?

Her paranormal romance novella, Werewolves in London, placed in the Got Wolf contest and started her writing career as an author of sexy heroes and lush fantasy worlds.

Karilyn lives in North Texas with her own hunky hero, a crazy dog nicknamed The Kraken, and a handful of colorful saltwater fish.

Excerpt ~

I strained to release my arm from Griffith’s vise-like grip while scanning the surrounding trees, trying to determine which was less of a threat, the beast of a man holding me or those who might be waiting for me in the woods.

“You will come inside, now.” Griffith spoke slowly and deliberately as if I were a small child.

I batted at the hand Griffith placed on my head. “I’m not a puppy, quit petting me.”

“I will protect you.” Griffith’s warm breath caressed my ear. “If for no other reason, to find out what I’m giving up and why she wants you so badly.”

I inhaled his masculine scent, like musky earth. It washed over my face, and the tension in my jaw released. I stopped struggling. “Are you the devil?” My tongue was thick and heavy so the words came out slurred.

“Not even close.” His words soothed and comforted, like having a weighted blanket cocoon me. Each movement was an effort. It wasn’t the same as the thing in the woods. This was more like the feeling after a long massage or bubble bath.

“It’s not safe.” Griffith wrapped his arms around me, and I rested against his broad chest.

“It’s not safe.” I nodded. My muscles relaxed and my eyelids grew heavy.

“It’s cold. We’re going inside.” Griffith kept his arm supporting me as he steered me toward the house.

“We’re going inside.” I parroted and walked up the steps, leaning heavily on him.

Out of the corner of my eye, something was cautiously moving at the edge of the woods. Branches snapped as whatever was observing us crept closer.

AUTHOR BIO ~

Growing up with four siblings had Maureen familiar with escaping into a good book, or the recesses of her mind. She realized later in life everyone didn’t have characters telling stories in their heads, or weren’t envisioning magic and mayhem within the everyday. This, and long walks in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania spawned a love of writing.

Since her desire to become a Solid Gold Dancer was thwarted when the show was discontinued, Maureen opted to pursue other paths. Attempting to conquer new endeavors proved fruitful with her first novella, while other attempts, such as challenging a fear of heights with parasailing, were unsuccessful.

Therefore she’s chased other interests, though none-the-less-daring, but closer to the ground, such as belly-dancing, becoming a self-proclaimed tequila connoisseur, fulfilling her role as biker babe to her alpha hubby and surviving motherhood to twins (so far).

Penning stories boasting laughter, light suspense and something magical in the hope of sharing her love of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary world.
